The history, the aesthetics, the culture, everything. When we started making axes 2,5 million years ago, this marks our transformation to become humans in prehistoric times. Since then the axe allows us to fell trees, build houses, hunt, maintain a fire and more. We have explored new land and built new societies with an axe in our hand. For me it started with a curiosity about the dirty work of shaping glowing steel using my own body. I learned forging at axe forge Gränsfors Bruk and then started working at axe forge Wetterlings, first as stand-in for the manager and then as ceo. It was a great honor to be a part of these teams and I learned a lot. By starting my own company and working in smaller scale I could create conditions to stay true to my values in all aspects of the tool and in each step of the making. To be relaxed and work in your own rhythm. The axe becomes an extension of yourself. Sometimes you use your whole body to chop off big chunks, and sometimes you gently carve see-through shavings. Disappear in looking at the grain to see where to place the next cut. Slowly let the shape get closer to your aim. Listen to the sound of a sharp tool in the green wood. As important as the axe has been in the history of mankind, it still is for us today, but not for the same reasons. Working with your hands makes you relate and connect to the world around you in a more respectful and humble way. Craft and nature also work as a calm oasis for many people in this fast spinning world. The axe embodies strength in so many ways. I make axes out of curiosity and love for the tool itself. I carve prototypes in wood, and then forge them in metal. I use the axe a lot, and professional carvers test continuously. Then I keep making new versions slightly different from the previous one, and continue to adjust each detail until I have reached my axe. I make small series of the axe in cooperation with carefully selected suppliers. We make them in certain ways based on what really adds to the function and durability of the axe. It’s made in Swedish Smedjebacken, at a steel mill renowned for it’s quality. When testing a number of selected steels, this steel outperformed the others. Each alloy element affects the steel in a certain way. The modest carbon level gets us up to desired hardness, and avoids brittleness. The molybdenum increases ability to harden, increases wear resistance and reduces brittleness. The vanadium helps to get a finer grain during forging. It's an old forging method where tool halves together form the shape of the axe between them. The big hammer head smashes the tools together and the blacksmith works the white hot steel from tool to tool until it has the right shape. This way we get great control of working in the right temperatures, which allows us to not compromise our choice of steel. We can forge in our first choice steel rather than using a lower alloyed steel. Our hardening technique is carefully developed to ensure that the edge will take and hold a very fine edge for a long time and that the axe head will withstand a lot of abuse. This keen method is more time consuming and costly, but definitely worth the effort. In our tests, this edge lasts remarkably longer. The idea is to get raw materials as close as possible, and not cross the stream to get water. Ash is our favorite because it is hard and tough to endure a bad hit, but also elastic enough to flex and pick up vibrations to protect the hands from the strike. It is traditionally used for axe handles in southern Sweden. The ash we use grows in northern Skåne. The color of the wood is bright in the sapwood and darker brown in the heartwood. The shafting is done with great care. Both handle and wood wedge are fitted furniture dry to be as contracted as possible. We secure the wedge with wood glue. Holding closer to the end knob empowers each strike to remove bigger chunks of wood. The long curved edge easily carves into the wood. The flat bevel makes the sharp edge catch the fibers without bouncing off or sucking into the wood. The handle curve aligns well with the edge line from every grip point. Oval handle profile allows for good direction and stabile grip. The generous end knob protects the axe from sliding out of hands when chopping hard. The ash is hard and tough for not breaking from a bad hit, and flexy to pick up some of the vibrations to protect the hands from the strike. The axe is balanced just below the axe head, which makes every gram work to your advantage. When you do precision work, the axe feels lighter because your grip point is the same as the balance point.
